A memorable birthday…

This one.

My 24th Birthday.

The birthday of a Ramen noodle party.

The first birthday I had accepted that I wouldn’t see my family, I would spend it where I lived with friends and with my husband. The birthday where my husband surprised me by calling me out of work and driving me home to what would become an amazing birthday weekend with my family. I had beach days with my parents, brunch with my brother, and a spectacular surprise day in NYC. My love spoiled me with Aladdin on broadway, an amazing dinner at ABC Kitchen, and a perfect day to walk around one of my favorite cities.

Currently… September Edition

Reading… Present Over Perfect by Shauna Niequist. For anyone that has ever felt like doing things is what brings them value (raising both my hands) this book is a reminder that we are not defined by what we do, how much we do, or how well we do it. Highly recommend this read!
Playing… Professor Noggin with the littles that I watch in the afternoons. They kick my butt with their knowledge of birds and medieval times!
Watching… Lark Rise to Candleford. It’s like Downton Abbey and The Paradise combined. Period dramas are my thing really.
Trying… to go Vegan for a week.
Cooking… new recipes! Exploring Vegan recipes for cheese alternatives.
Eating… Ramen. Like, at least every other day at this point…
Drinking… Ginger-Mint Kombucha. I am currently attempting to create the perfect brew of Kombucha (and not kill the scoby). Four batches in and this is my favorite so far!
Calling… my parents, all the time. To basically talk about how we miss my brother.
Texting… my brother, at military school (okay iMessaging because that’s all he’s allowed – but it’s the best thing ever after a week of NO
Pinning… curriculum material for the year and pictures of what I want my dream apartment to look like.
Tweeting… not much lately. Basically re-tweeting things I see.
Going… (just got back) from Maine! We went to Portland, Freeport, and a free Ben Rector concert hosted by LL Bean! It was an amazing weekend!
Loving… my husband. Corny I know. But this man is my greatest support, my best friend, and the reason I remember to eat some days. I am loving having him as my roommate every day.
Hating… coffee right now, for some reason. My taste buds are hating coffee?! I must be getting a cold…
Discovering… the Vegan community. And how welcoming they are to people who are questioning and exploring. They get a horrible reputation for being judgmental opinion pushers, but really everyone I have encountered has been kind, supportive, and as helpful as they can be!
Thinking… about what to cook for dinner tomorrow.
Feeling… like an emotional roller coaster!
Hoping (for)… a new housing situation to come about quickly.
Listening (to)… Jupiter by Sleeping at Last
Celebrating… the coming of Autumn!!!! My favorite time of year!
Smelling… Paddywax Early Grey and Lavender candle
Ordering… more electrolyte powder
Thanking… about my new job! More details soon…
Considering… how the flowers grow. With trust, a deepening of roots, and soaking in the nutrients that come their way. My little garden is teaching me a lot this year…
Starting… a part time job in the afternoons with two awesome kids who have great taste in music, a love for books, and an awesome sense of humor.
Finishing… a season of life…

Summer Favorites!

Processed with VSCO with t1 preset123456789

  1. This is the scent of my summer. I love everything about this candle! The cute way it sits there on the shelf and the amazing smell when I light it!
  2. Ben Rector is the sound of my summer. I actually rode 45 minutes to work one day listening to only to Fear. If you haven’t listened to his CD Brand New, I highly suggest you give it a try! (and if you don’t like it, be VERY thankful you don’t have to drive somewhere with me!)
  3. This day bag is the best summer purchase I made! I love that it’s handmade in the town I lived in for a year in VT before Burlington. I love the french ticking inside. I love how light it is, how it fits everything I need for a day (including my laptop), and how chic it is on my shoulder. LOVE. THIS. BAG.
  4. Making Ramen. This delicious adult version of noodles and broth can be made an uncountable amount of ways! I don’t have a recipe to write down yet because I keep throwing in fridge leftovers. It’s the perfect “use all the veggies in the fridge” meal. I eat it for more meals in a week than I want to admit…
  5. If you like Ginger and not sicky-sweet sodas this is the drink for you. Go get it!
  6. I am constantly on the search for an organic and natural ingredient deodorant that doesn’t irritate my skin and actually works when its 90 with 90% humidity outside. And this worked! It saved me from a smelly summer, and I will be eternally grateful!
  7. I discovered this GEM of a shop in Burlington this summer. I love that everything is American made (most things by hand). I love to know what I am supporting when I buy things for others or myself, and this store has a story for every item in it! If you’re in Burlington check it out!
  8. This little succulent is absolutely my favorite. And the lovely farmers market that I got it from (and keep getting one from weekly… oops!) is the best! Again, if you’re in Burlington, GO!
  9. My farm share. The community is amazing, the organic produce is amazing, and the bouquet of flowers I can pick each week are the brightest part of my kitchen!

Raising Dragons

There are moments when I am proud to be a nanny, and listening to this spoken word poetry right now is one of them. I am so proud to be able to work with future women. To raise a little girl to know that she is more than a princess in a whale bone corset, she will know she can buy a pen a write a story. She can be a dragon, setting the world on fire where she steps and bringing awe to those around her as she glistens in the sunlight. So, I am with you Tai, give me all the girls…

I hope you were struck by these lines… they brought tears to my eyes. I hope every little girl who I am blessed to have in my life hears this message from me in some form.

“You are so much mythical magic you bust the seams off any princess dress. So my girl, enter this world on wings, screaming crimson and gold. Blazing and bright as sunrise. Break the dawn like an eggshell. You are welcome in these arms, and I hope the world is ready for you.” Tai Weinman

The season of warm tea

While I recognize that most people are lamenting the close of summer, and some are still clinging to wearing shorts as they freeze in this weather, I not only accept fall but I revel in it. I am SO excited about today. The weather is cool and the rain is beating on my window as I write. Autumn is my favorite season. In the summer I have always rushed to get things done. Complained about the heat. And gotten annoyed at how sweat melts away any attempt to look professional by wearing makeup.

Summer means a lot of good things, but Autumn means my favorite things. It is the season that ushers in drinking warm tea. Trader Joe’s sells their Pumpkin Butter and I start to put it on my Gluten Free Toast Every morning. I can wear sweaters and warm fuzzy socks!

This Autumn, I have a new reason to be excited. I will be attending the English Nanny and Governess School to attain my certification as a Professional Governess! I am beyond thrilled to be starting this experience. It means leaving my job as a Nanny in Brooklyn, but it opens the door to being a Governess anywhere! Plus, I am a complete and total nerd. I love to learn. I love classes and books, and to some degree even homework. There is just something about feeling challenged by academia. I am so incredibly excited to start next week… Eleven days until I move in!

So, eventually I will keep packing. But for right now I am going to curl up with a fuzzy blanket, drink my tea, and enjoy catching up on episodes of Once Upon a Time…
